Amethyst is crystalline quartz which presents in shades of purple, lilac or mauve. Usually faceted, amethyst has distinctive inclusions which look like tiger stripes, thumbprints or feathers. The tips of amethyst crystals tend to be darker. Darker shades of amethyst are generally more in demand than the lighter shades.
Natural amethyst is found in Brazil, Russia, Australia, the USA and many other countries throughout the world and varies widely in color, structure and quality.
Amethyst crystals can be grown in laboratories with the same chemical composition as those found in nature, but with a deeper and more consistent color and structure due to the controlled environment. Laboratory grown amethyst, like laboratory grown emerald, ruby, sapphire and other gemstones, is frequently more expensive than the naturally occurring crystal due to the expensive processes involved and the more desirable results. When tested in a gemology laboratory, lab grown amethyst tests the same as natural amethyst and is indistinguishable from high quality natural amethyst.
Most of the larger amethyst pieces found on this website are laboratory grown.
